The south side of the building, where the wing of living quarters was destroyed by fire. Author’s collection.

The intensity of the encounters was growing. Just before Mackey was scheduled to open the club, a mysterious fire struck the building. The entire L-shaped south wing was destroyed. It was composed of several levels of living quarters where maids and porters had once lived. It also held a private poker room. The origin of the fire was never found.

Renovations of the club continued as the date of opening grew closer. One day, Carl and Janet were working in the old kitchen. During one of my talks with Carl, he recalled hearing strange things in the kitchen. “We would hear weird noises through the vents coming from the basement,” he remembered.

While in the kitchen working, Janet once again came in contact with the dark forces at the club. She claimed she was grabbed around the waist and stomach by something. As the grip tightened, she tried desperately to wiggle free from the grasp of the invisible specter. She began to scream out in despair, and Carl once again came to her aid. When he entered the kitchen, Janet was let free by the force. “We heard evil laughter from all around us,” Carl once told me. As the diabolical laughter encompassed them from all sides, pots and pans ripped away from the wall where they hung and flew across the room like bullets. Both Carl and Janet escaped without injury but were stunned.

Plans pushed ahead, and the club opened in the fall of 1978. Once again the rooms were filled with sprightly music and entertained guests. The malevolent spirits inside the club seemed determined to make crystal clear the fact that the building belonged to them. Soon others would begin to experience extreme showdowns, and the spirits would do whatever it took to make these new visitors leave forever.
